Présentation
en Français: ici
I am French, I am 40 years old and I reside in French Southern Brittany (Lorient harbor).
I am an author in the publishing, the press and the multi-media one since 1992. Photography that I practise with passion is another complementary and privileged means of expression.
It enables me to illustrate the texts which I publish in my various professional fields. I began adolescent. I animated the photo club of my college and am turned quite naturally to me towards underwater photography after having tasted the "pleasures of Neptune" as of the 10 years age.
I began underwater photography towards the 14 years age with an Aquamatic Formaplex instamatic underwater camera with 126 format. It was equipped with an optics of 26,5 mm (35 mm underwater) f/8 and with a sport viewfinder. It was marketed at the time by Spirotechnique become since Aqualung®.
It was also equipped with flash-bulbs (Magicub) to magnesium ! I am professional scubadiving instructor (BEES 2°) and CMAS 3 stars instructor.
But also nitrox confirmed, trimix and rebreather instructor. I use the rebreather
as method of quiet approach of underwater fauna for a certain number of my
underwater reports.
2) PRACTICE: I carried out illustrated reports in France on the Atlantic coast (French Southern Brittany), in Safaga, Charm-el-Sheik, Ras Mohamed, in the Brothers islands, Saint-John reef, Daedalus reef, Elphinstone reef... in Egypt, in Mauritius, in Rodrigues, in French Polynesia of which the Australes islands, in the Canary Islands, in Morocco, in the Medas islands, broad of the Mediterranean..., in Saba, Saint Martin island, Saint-Barth island, Anguilla island, in Martinique island in the Caribbean Sea.
In addition to the catches of underwater sights, I am also specialized in the reports on first aid in scubadiving, exercises of Search and Rescue (SAR) and wiching by helicopter at sea.
3) PHOTO EQUIPMENT USED:
Land and marine pictures:
Faithful with the Nikon® treade mark, I used as land pictures: F601, then F90x - (N90x in english version), the first digital, Coolpix 950, then Coolpix 990, then D1 digital reflex cameras, then D200.
I on the open sea carry out considerable my land pictures (or rather marine) on vessels and I appreciate to have tropicalized cameras (tight with the streamings) seen under which conditions I work.
The rotor of a helicopter generates winds from 40 to 60 knoots, which raises many spray at sea. My D1 already took a big wave at the time of a report on Cetacea, with broad of the Mediterranean sea on board Fleur de Lampaul vessel. I affectionne the large angular ones which makes it possible to take pictures without too much retreat.
The scubadiving vessels are often exiguous. Obviously, a zoom 80-200 mm supplements my equipment for the catches of pictures of helicopters at sea. But also 16 mm fisheye to be in the action. I did not find anything of better than a rubish plastic bag and waterproof navy bag to protect my equipment.
A waterproof case always accompanies me to put my photo equipment at the shelter at the time of transport.
Underwater pictures:
For my underwater reports, I remained a long time faithful to my Nikonos V which followed me in almost all my underwater destinations. I gave up it already a few years ago for a F100 reflex camera (SLR) put out of housing. I digitize then my invertible films (slides).
I followed in parallel of an interested, attentive and admiring eye progress of digital since his beginnings. I carried out some underwater pictures tests using a digital Coolpix 950 camera put in a Ikelite® housing. The results were encouraging into macro but showed their own underwater operational limits. More particularly in ciptures of divers or fishs.
The low sensitivity and the delay with release
of the camera were balanced for many pictures of mobile subjects, by a blur
penalizing but sometimes artistic
Let us not forget that digital photography was being born. Progress of this extremely promising field are very fast like the progressive disappearance of SLR for general public.
Remain that the light under the surface of water is much more demanding than the land light. The mistakes of youth of digital photography to a great extent are corrected today. The digital sensors and algorythmes associated can better and better treat the strong variations of the underwater light (dynamic between the most luminous zones and darkest of a scene).
The pixels do not do all. Still remain to make progress by increasing current dynamics. Always it is that I recently decided to switch to the digital underwater photography with a D200 reflex camera which corresponds to a great extent to my waitings.
4) PICTURES PROCESSING :
I began in data processing, there is more than 15 years on Mac Plus with 1 Mo of RAM ! I remained faithful with Apple®. I appreciate his innovations, ergonomics, the design of his computers and the user-friendliness of his operating systems. Considerable creators in the graphic arts use Mac.
Until now I digitized my invertible films (slides) carried out at the time of my catches of underwater pictures using a Nikon® Super Coolscan 4000 ED slides scanner. For digital use, I work with RAW format: Nikon® NEF. The RAW corresponds digital, with negative of the SLR photography.
I wait impatiently until the manufacturers adopt an open universal RAW (open source). The multitude of formats closed owners do not facilitate the treatment and the exchanges of the pictures.
The Adobe® mark leader in the commercial field of the graphic arts in data processing launched an open RAW: DNG. This new format is adopted by its professional software of image processing (Adobe® Photoshop).
The digital cameras of the principal manufacturers use always to date RAW formats owners. I safeguard my files with the NEF, DNG, TIFF formats and JPEG for the consultation screen.
For my various publications, I treat myself my digital pictures but also carries out a majority of routings and assemblies photographic. I generally deliver my files on the Photoshop® format (PSD), in the form of cd-room or dvd-room according to the quantity.
It is the format generally required by the publishers or the press magazine. A board contact (thumbs) JPEG accompanies the whole in order to facilitate the selection of the pictures, to specify pictures legends and rights.
5) PUBLICATIONS:
I published ten books on the training of scubadiving and first-aid, at the Editions du Plaisancier publisher (Vagnon) which I put regularly up to date since about fifteen years. They are for certain with one 7th edition. My books are advised by the CMAS and various French-speaking organizations of scubadiving.
